The NFL playoffs have a very important role in modern US society. Basically they are the start of the probably most important sports event in the United States. The whole purpose of the playoffs is to decide who will go on to play in the Super Bowl. It’s probably not necessary to mention that Americans are absolutely crazy about American football. It can probably be compared how most Europeans feel about soccer.
The playoffs date back all the way to 1933 but the first real NFL playoff had its beginning more than 30 years later in 1967 and at the time four teams qualified for playing. Then when the leagues merged, the American Football League with the National Football League in 1970 the playoffs were expanded to a total of eight teams and then again to ten teams, eight years later in 1978 and then yet again to 12 teams in 1990.
Interesting fact is that the National Football League is the only professional sports league in the US that uses a single-elimination tournament to decide who will play in its playoffs. All other leagues use the best of format in lue of the single elimination format used by the NFL for its playoffs.
To this date the Houston Texans are the only team in the league (they joined as an expansion team in 2002) who never qualified for the NFL playoffs, hopefully when we look at the 2012 NFL playoff schedule they will be part of it.
The playoffs are also very interesting because of their time frame, they are played in the cold months around many holidays which could be one of the reasons why they’re so popular. Its winter, the days are short and when you get home you just want to relax, pop a beer, have a snack and watch something good on TV. While that probably isn’t the main reason why they’re so popular it sure could contribute into the equation.
